For tryghedens skyld, selvfølgelig

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Dear Comrades.

We are from the Forum for Prison Abolition.

Many of us here today have experienced the power of the police and the justice system on our own bodies and on our comrades’. Perhaps especially in recent years, as activists have resisted the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, a genocide that the Government, Danish Universities, and companies contribute to. This resistance has been met with batons and police dogs, arrests and imprisonment, with surveillance, and sanctions from schools and workplaces.

But the increase in policing, surveillance, and punishment does not, of course, only affect activists.
Punishment is a tool, a hammer, that politicians reach for again and again. But punishment is not a hammer that repairs anything. Punishment breaks down lives, people, communities, families.

And those who politicians most eagerly want to punish, those who are hit the hardest, are racialized people, migrants, and children of migrants. They are the unemployed, workers, and working-class children.

Since the government took office in 2022, they have promised us a major new penal reform. Punishments are to be harsher and longer, and the government has said themselves that it doesn’t matter if it works. What matters is that people are punished.

While the reform is still pending, the government has pushed forward with plans to expand the prison system and recruit more prison guards. Because there are already too many people in prison for the system to cope.

But we don’t want any more fucking prisons!

At the same time, punishment is creeping out of prisons and into people’s everyday lives in new and invasive ways. We see this most recently in a seemingly endless series of racist and paranoid “safety packages.”

Here, the government talks about “unsafe behavior” and “unsafe individuals.” They talk about young men from socially disadvantaged housing areas, and about women who feel unsafe.
What is actually unsafe remains unclear. But they mention, for example, young people who “hang out at stations and town squares and harass others.”

And the tools to prevent this include more CCTV surveillance at stations and in housing areas, increased fines, location bans, nightlife bans, reversed ankle monitors (that alert if you are not where you’re supposed to be), and the deployment of so-called “safety guards.”

How unsafe is it really that some people are standing on a sidewalk talking loudly? Who does it create safety for, when others are not allowed to move freely and hang out in public? Certainly not the young boys and men who constantly have to consider whether their hanging out will be perceived as threatening by passersby.

Another bill would allow the intelligence service (PET) to mass-collect our internet data without a court order. All the information that is stored every time we click “accept cookies”, data that records where we’ve been, what we’ve liked, and what we’ve bought. They also want to mass-collect data from all public authorities. That includes your medical records. Even if you are completely irrelevant to the investigation.

That means that every time you talk to a public authority, you are talking to the police.
All of this surveillance is meant to make punishment easier. For safety’s sake, of course.

The kind of safety they’re talking about is gross and invasive. It’s racist and violent. What it really protects is the state and its borders, corporations, and the right to property and capital.

That’s why we say: Fuck your safety!

The desire for more punishment is not new, but right now it is spreading at breakneck speed through society. We see it not only in the justice system but also in schools, universities, and workplaces.
We must keep fighting back. We must continue to propose alternatives.

And it’s not only in institutions that the logic of punishment thrives. Even among us here today, anti-fascists and radical leftists, we punish each other. Even though that’s not what most of us believe in. The world we envision is one where we support and protect each other when someone is harmed.

It’s a world where we build resilient communities, and to do that, we must practice being in the inevitable conflicts that arise between people. We are already doing that. We already have the tools.
Let’s keep practicing. Let’s continue to offer care, to show trust and solidarity.

We need each other. We don’t need punishment or surveillance. What we really need in the fight against fascism is each other.

(English below) Kære kammerater, glædelig 1. maj Vi kommer fra Forum for Fængselsafskaffelse.
